Montegrappa, Italy’s oldest manufacturer of fine writing instruments, is proud of its heritage and has honoured all manner of Italian cultural touchstones, from grappa production to soccer to the Tricolore. With the contemporary classic, the Fortuna pen, as its base, Heartwood pays homage to that most Italian of values: a love of organic materials and the gifts of Mother Nature. The new pens explore the relationship between man and nature, a precious link that must never be undervalued.
Three versions of the Heartwood pen have been created to represent the range and variety of woods that hold special appeal for the connoisseur and the aesthete. The material is recognised globally as one mastered and elevated by Italian craftspersons. Montegrappa has embodied the gorgeous brown, black or tan hues of various woods in pen caps and barrels fashioned from organic wood materials, accented by brushed bronze-coloured trims.
Most popular with Italian woodworkers, and found in furnishings, in boats and even musical instruments are woods with distinctive grains and colours. One pen is fashioned of the darkest teak, walnut provides a pen with a nutmeg colouring while pear wood delivers a reddish cast.
Offered as fountain pens, rollerballs and ballpoints, Heartwood pens remind us that – even in an age of wireless Communications and high-tech materials – handwriting with instruments fashioned from elements provided by nature will always embody the essence of humanity.

… the Reminiscence Returns
A century after it first appeared, an ageless Montegrappa classic has returned. Launched in 1915, its creators could not have known that they designed an enduring masterpiece that would even find resonance in its name: Reminiscence.
This evergreen Elmo & Montegrappa writing instrument, from the early days of both the fountain pen and Montegrappa itself, re-emerged in 1983, then again in 2001. Here, in 2017, the time is right to recall the elegance of the Reminiscence family. The new, celebratory edition also honours a birthday, and is so-named Reminiscence 105th Anniversary Collection to mark 105 years since the founding of Montegrappa.
Remarkably, few of its aesthetic details have changed since its birth – in fact, almost none have been altered and this realisation speaks volumes about true and timeless designs. Only the dimensions are slightly larger then those of the vintage models, but the air of gracefulness remains constant.
Its form is the essence of Montegrappa, characterised by the pen’s octagonal barrel and cap shape, a Montegrappa motif that continues to symbolise the brand. Made entirely in polished Sterling Silver, the Reminiscence is adorned with hand-engraved Liberty designs.
Reminiscence 105th Anniversary Pens will be offered solely as fountain pens, in a limited edition of only 105 examples, to commensurate with the years that have passed since the formation of the brand. The fountain pen is piston-fed, with 18k gold nib and ebonite feeder, available in the grades Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, Double Broad e Stub 1.1.
As Time Goes By
While fountain pens are intrinsically “retro” by nature, the technology has evolved over the millennium since the first pen appeared with its own ink reservoir first. The modern fountain pen has been refined to a state where contemporary materials, new inks and other advances have eliminated any operational issues, while the form
has embraced everything from ornate commemorative pens to minimalist devices devoid of any protrusions.
What has embodied the spirit of the fountain pen user of the 21st century is his or her respect for the art of writing, and the way that a fountain pen encourages the user to exercise care. Underscoring this is another level of appreciation: that of the aesthetic of the legendary pens of the 1930s. The key recreating the pens of the golden age is to apply these values to writing instruments that incorporate the niceties of modern construction, while retaining all of the virtues of the original.
“Nazionale” is a model name that was a part of the Elmo catalogue, from the late 1930s. It oozes with
Art Deco attitude, its colours evoking the era with exquisite tints and shadings. Now highly collectible, the Nazionale has inspired Montegrappa to revive it with a key feature not available eight decades ago.
Nazionale returns, visually remaining entirely faithful to the original style, with this limited edition being produced in Marble Green celluloid, precisely as it was in the 1930s. The pen’s design is enriched with black resin details on its junctions and blind cap, the material being the superior modern substitute for ebonite, made without sacrificing the correct “look.” Trim is necessarily in Sterling Silver.
Its mid-section metal ring is further engraved with the brand logo, while the pocket clip ends up with a decorative teardrop element, augmenting the vintage feel.
What has changed is the nib, the most crucial functioning part of any pen, to ensure that its “write-ability” matches the expectations of the modern user. The new Nazionale, to be known as the Nazionale Flex, is so-named because it is fitted with a flexible nib that allows different types of hand-writing and calligraphic experiences to be performed with the same writing instrument
by simply applying more pressure to the nib.
For enhanced flexibility, the nib is made of 14k gold, and will be made available only in the grades of Extra Fine and Fine, as it accomplishes the rest on its own, according to how it is applied.
The nib’s cut-out shoulders offer comfortable curving, for an enhanced writing experience. Also in keeping with the era during which the Nazionale was born, which predates cartridges, this fountain pen’s filling system is piston-only.
Due to severely limited remaining quantities of the material that forms the Nazionale’s cap and body,Montegrappa will issue only 100 Extra Fine and 100 Fine Nazionale fountain pens. Its collectability is therefore assured.
The green marbled color is sold out, it’s just been released the new celluloid Caramel color with same limited serial numbers
