Every year since 1992, Montblanc has honoured an influential patron of art from the antiquity to the 20th century, with a limited edition writing instrument. Every Patron of Art Limited Edition underscores Montblanc’s belief that arts and culture are an essential part of any thriving society and can only flourish with the support of dedicated patrons. For its 30th (1992 – 2022) and final edition, Montblanc created a double edition, celebrating the lives and legacy of British monarch Victoria and her consort Albert.
The Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Victoria & Albert Limited Edition 4810 marks the early years of the royal couple with a barrel in pearl-white lacquer, a symbol of purity and youth, and a cone embellished with a traditional Victorian pattern as well as the entwined “V&A” monogram, in which the couple liked to unite their initials.
The edition dedicated to Victoria features a cap in translucent mint-green lacquer, one of her favourite colours to wear. The decorative pattern visible beneath the lacquer of the cap is inspired by the fence surrounding the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, London. The cap is adorned by a royal-blue crown and the Montblanc emblem in precious resin. The words “I will be good” are engraved on the cap ring. The shape of the clip is inspired by her sceptre with a green stone referring to her engagement ring from Albert. The handcrafted Au 750 solid gold, champagne-tone gold-coated nib is decorated with a stylised rose that represents Queen Victoria, who is still remembered today as ‘England’s Rose’.
Restricted to 4810 pieces, representing the height of the Mont Blanc mountain in metres, the last of Patron of Art Limited Edition 4810 fountain pens will be available before the end of April 2022.
The Albert edition features a burgundy-coloured translucent lacquer cap which is inspire4d by the colours of the British Field Marshal uniform worn at his wedding. The geometric, stepped-shaped decoration beneath is recalling the distinctive neogothic stepped gable of Schloss Rosenau, Albert’s child home. The cap shape is inspired by the dome of the Crystal Palace, while the cap ring is engraved with the motto “Treu und fest” (“faithful and steadfast”) that comes with his coat of arms. The sceptre-shaped clip features a red stone. A reference to his origin, the coat of arms of Saxony are found at the centre of Albert’s royal coat of arms is engraved on the handcrafted Au 750 solid gold, champagne-tone gold-coated nib.
In 1992, Montblanc started the foundation “D’enterprise Montblanc de la Culture” to support and protect the contemporary arts. Montblanc annually creates a strictly limited edition fountain pen whose design is in the style of a patron of art whose name bears relation. The name Montblanc has always been associated with precious gifts and keepsakes that reflect the pinnacle of artisanal prowess and traditional craftsmanship.
