We were inspired by Japanese art to create a collection of notebooks dedicated to manual writing enthusiasts. The handmade 300-page notebook is stapled with a cover made of 220 gram paper of Chiyogami type (Dune and Cherry blossom) and Katazome type (the other four). Both are made in Japan and obtained from mulberry fibers.
CHIYOGAMI PAPER
Chiyogami is a washi paper (washi in japanese is intended for all the papers produced in Japan differently from the Western ones) obtained from an mixture of kozo and sulphite fibers. This paper is also known woldwide as Yuzen. Its use originates from the Edo period in the rural area of Kyoto, where it is used to decorate the house. The paper patterns emulate the kimono of Kyoto women, and it is still silk-screen printed by hand.
KATAZOME PAPER
Katzome is a japanese paper obtained by kozo fibers, a plant of the family of mulberry, which is expressly cultivated and crop once a year. Once the sheet is ready, it is spread with rice-starch paste before being silk-screen printed in different colors. This process allows the colors to penetrate in the paper fibers, giving them a unique depht and making them resistant to light. Once the colors are dried out, the sheet is rinsed and dried. This complex procedure originates from traditionalprinting techniques of japanese kimonos and was introduced in the printing of katazome paper in Kyoto during the 40s.
In February this year, the owner of the last Katazome paper production studio, Wazome Kogei in Kyoto, passed away. Mr. Kawakatsu was neither old nor in poor health, so his untimely death shocked everyone. Due to the lack of a successor, the studio closed its doors.
The paper is Tomoe River Sanzen version (the only version on the market after Tomoegawa sold the license to Sanzen paper) of 52 gsm, cream colour.
